Harrah's announces 2007 WSOP Schedule

10 January 2007

By Aaron Todd

After unprecedented success in 2006, Harrah's has added nine events to the 2007 World Series of Poker schedule. The WSOP will award 55 bracelets, including 13 "World Championships" in a wide variety of games.

The WSOP will begin on June 1 with the $5,000 World Championship Mixed Hold'em and $500 Casino Employees events. The Main Event will begin on June 6, with final table play scheduled to begin on July 17. All tournaments will once again be held at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino.

The Rio will have up to 300 tables available for use in tournaments, satellites and cash games, which represents an increase of 100 tables from last year. The additional tables will allow larger tournament fields and reduce the number of start dates for the Main Event.

New events on the schedule include: $5,000 World Championship Mixed Hold'em (Limit/No Limit); $2,500 Omaha/Seven Card Stud Hi-Low-8 or Better; $5,000 World Championship Heads Up No-Limit Hold'em; and $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better.

The popular $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament returns as a World Championship event. The tournament, which required three marathon sessions and finished at 9 a.m. last year, has been extended to five days this year.

Two more H.O.R.S.E. tournaments have been added (at $2,500 and $5,000 buy-ins), and a $1,000 S.H.O.E. event has also been added.

In another change, all bracelet events will conclude prior to the beginning of the Main Event.

In 2006, the WSOP set records with 42,000 entrants in 46 events, including 8,773 in the Main Event. The prize pool for the series exceeded $171 million with the Main Event prize pool surpassing $85 million.

Aaron Todd

During his time away from his Casino City reporter's desk, home-game hot shot Aaron Todd plays in a weekly poker game with his friends in the Boston area. While he is happy to play Texas Hold'em, he'd rather mix it up and include lesser-known games such as Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, and (his personal favorite) Deuce-to-Seven Triple Draw, in the rotation of games.

After graduating from St. Lawrence University in 2000, Aaron worked in media relations for college athletic departments. When he grew tired of long nights and weekends watching college sports in leaky press boxes, he decided to spend long nights and weekends watching professional card players in stuffy poker rooms.

A native of a small town in New York just south of Ottawa, Aaron lives in Norwood, MA, with his wife Wendy. Write to Aaron at aarontodd@casinocity.com.
